Labour’s Proposed Asylum Policy
Over the weekend, far-right groups openly celebrated online as the Home Secretary heavily trailed the government’s new asylum proposals. The forthcoming statement (expected on 17 November 2025 at 2pm, with a Commons address at 3.30pm) includes an alarming shift in how refugees will be treated in the UK.
Key Proposals
1. Refugees recognised by the UK will
• Be granted only 2.5 years of leave at a time
• Have to wait 20 years before being able to settle
• Live under a continuous threat of removal if their home country is later deemed “safe”
This would force families especially children to live in uncertainty and fear for two decades.
2. The Home Office workload will surge
The Refugee Council estimates that the new system could create 1.4 million applications over the next decade, despite the Home Office already being overstretched and unable to meet current processing demands.
3. Additional measures being considered
• Confiscating jewellery and valuables from people seeking protection
• Framing the policy as necessary to prevent a Reform UK government
• Gaining support from Conservative MPs who back the proposals
Nigel Farage himself reportedly told the Daily Mail that the Home Secretary “sounds like a Reform supporter,” exposing the political game being played.
What These Proposals Really Mean
None of this will “stop the boats”.
Instead, it will:
• Intensify poverty and fear among people already recognised as refugees
• Undermine integration, making it harder to secure housing, employment, or stability
• Increase pressure on government services, as temporary status is proven to worsen health and wellbeing
• Create unnecessary administrative chaos the Home Office is unprepared for
Temporary status over decades destroys the chance of rebuilding a life.
